Helen, a female soldier in the British Army volunteers for an experiment in “sliding”, a means of moving to an alternate world. She lands on a world where a country named Sparta is the super-power although its weaponry is primitive. This world dates back to ancient Greece on our Earth but on this other world, Sparta controls all Europe, including Britain. Here, she is offered the choice of fighting in the Army or becoming a slave.

In Sparta, slaves are treated without compassion of any kind and usually forcibly infibulated; females with a ring, or rings, in the labia; males with a heavier ring in the end of the penis, thus prohibiting any chance of illicit sexual intercourse. Helen, as a foreigner without passport in this fierce land, has her own labia pierced and ringed as a matter of course.

Female soldiers are expected to fight alongside their male counterparts. There are no uniforms, Spartan soldiers fight in the nude! For soldiers, this enforced nudity is considered to be an honour. On the other hand, the various punishments for disobedience, cowardice, lack of discipline and even illicit sex are terrible!

Male and female soldiers are under constant and intensive training, making sure that their exposed bodies are as toned and muscular as can be. Also, both have been conditioned towards a degree of exhibitionism from birth. Helen, of course, has not had the benefit of this conditioning and consequently finds the constant exposure extremely humiliating. …

In stark contrast to the military, public nudity in civilian Sparta is considered to be shameful and sometimes even imposed as a punishment on serious law breakers. The question for Helen is – will she be able to stand up to the ordinary rigors of Spartan military life; not to mention the constant, humiliating exposure of her body to anyone who cares to look?
